Trends in Educational Technology- Quizlet

Trends in Education Technology change like the leaves in fall. Each new school year brings new updates, new apps, and new online tools available for teachers to learn. However, while everything is geared toward student achievement, it’s the educators who are often the ones being held responsible for that achievement. The educational technology pool is deep, it is also daunting for teachers looking for the right fit for their classroom. Unfortunately, many school technology decisions are made without teacher input and therefore change often. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) holds a conference each year in Philly for educators around the country to sign up to speak about what’s trending, what’s working, and what’s not, in their own classrooms.

ISTE published Edtech’s Hottest Topics for 2023, and of the eight hottest topics, Artificial Intelligence stood out to me as the top trend of the year. AI has jumped to the forefront of many educators' lists of “Things to Know” as well as “Things to Avoid.” Artificial Intelligence can lend a big helping hand to any classroom depending on the classroom and the tool. A tool I used in my classroom, that has just been updated with AI, is Quizlet! (FYI: you will need an account to access Quizlet).

Quizlet is a learning website that offers everything from flashcards and quizzes to timed games and a new AI feature called Q-Chat. Q-Chat is the newest addition to Quizlet. “Q-Chat is a fully adaptive AI tutor experience built on OpenAI’s ChatGPT API. Designed to make studying fun and effective, Q-Chat is more than a basic chatbot and can help you understand material, guide you when learning a language, and

provide study coaching when you don’t know where to start,” (Q-chat: Meet your new AI tutor). With AI, Quizlet still allows educators to customize lessons for their classes. They can create flashcards, quizzes, and games with the material the students need to know. However, now with AI, users can interact with AI for a more in-depth study session.

For example, for a teacher to create a “Study Guide,” they just need to upload or paste their notes, upload a file from Google Drive or YouTube video, and Quizlet will turn it into a 1:1 study session with AI. Similar to a private tutor, Q-Chat is adaptive and can ask and answer questions in real-time. The questions Q-chat asks are relevant, student-friendly, and explore a deeper understanding of the topic given. I really like this new AI feature in Quizlet and I think other educators will too.

Watch the video below as I interact with Q-chat.
